And final highlight from the #Dragonmeet trade hall... "Dice Men": the origin story of Games Workshop by Ian Livingstone with Steve Jackson, which I was pleased to have signed by Ian - their #FightingFantasy books, and #WhiteDwarf back when it had #TTRPG coverage, were a big influence on my early days in the hobby. https://unbound.com/books/games-workshop #GamesWorkshop
#MasksOfMayhem is #23 in the #FightingFantasy line. To be transparent, it will be the last one I'll cover here for some time. With more duds than entertaining ones lately, I need a break. Which is not to say I'll abandon #gamebooks in general. I have already started with the first book of another line. Stay tuned!
#MasksOfMayhem is frustrating the hell out of me, even more than #TrialOfChampions before. Really, what were they thinking by that time? Dozens of unforeseeable instant death choices! I'm thinking of stopping with #FightingFantasy for now and take refuge in another gamebook series. #LoneWolf would be a safe choice, I guess, but right now, I'm leaning towards the #SherlockHolmesSoloMysteries which I have fond memories of. Any other recommendations?

A Blue Giant Studios Fighting Fantasy figure released at Fighting Fantasy Fest 5 in September, based on one of Iain McCaig's internal black and white illustrations for Deathtrap Dungeon by Ian Livingstone - great fun to render it in colour

The previous three books of the series indicated a significant slump in quality. Science fiction themes, in particular, had rarely worked out this far. Along came #RobotCommando. A blatant rip-off of Transformers, throwing in dinosaurs on top. Finally getting non-linear gameplay right as well.
Gamebook fans, rejoice: Fighting Fantasy Classics has charted a course for The Port of Peril!

Very excited the new #fightingfantasy book has arrived! Blood Island! I’m ready to dive in!
#TrialOfChampions - the much-awaited (?) return to Deathtrap Dungeon! It's the right book for you if you like failing. In a way, most of these books are really about failing and trying again, of course. Though this one puts this whole idea to new levels.

Hope you're ready to duke it out with the undead, because the Fighting Fantasy gamebook, Armies of Death, is now part of the ever-growing and amazing Fighting Fantasy Classics lineup!

My #FightingFantasy output has been slowing down. I feel I've reached a stage where the line collapsed under the weight of its own success. #SwordOfTheSamurai came from the same authors as a previous book I actually liked, showing their talent. Though this one has several significant defects, it's hard to imagine it went through any serious quality control. Pressure to release more, quickly must have been considerable.

Do come and say hello!
Spoiler: the encounter with the Bone Demon is indeed a memorable one. It is, however, the only demon in a book called #DemonsOfTheDeep . What a fraud! Balancing it out, there are a couple of other quite spectacular encounters with non-demonic creatures to be found. Even if not particularly consistent in its theme, individual scenes will certainly stick to my mind.

#RebelPlanet is #18 in the #FightingFantasy #gamebook line. It is a book consisting of three long episodes. The first one has you wade through seedy bars, neo-noir style. The second one puts you on a university planet reminiscient of the 1970s. The third one falls flat in comparison, it is an unimaginative wilderness adventure. I discussed the book in detail with a collaborator a few years ago: https://www.goodolddays.net/game/id%2C1348/Rebel-Planet.html
