MDMRN<p>New Read - Fist of the North Star, Volume 18 (Viz Hardcover Edition)</p><p>The story has been wrapped up. Kenshiro returned Ryu home after teaching him all he can. </p><p>Ken and Rin. They're not end goals. I think we all knew that, even as Bat tried to force it to happen feeling unworthy of the woman he has loved since they were children. He was never competing with Kenshiro, though. MDMRN<p>New Read - Little Witch Academia (Series)</p><p>Last week on vacation I read my new copies of the Little Witch Academia manga. For those who have never seen the anime from Studio Trigger, it follows Akko, a teenage girl who is not from a witch family, going to school to learn magic. She's super excited and comes blindly from outside of witch culture.</p><p>It's a fish out of water story. It's a story of never giving up. It's also very fun.</p><p>The manga adapts much of the anime directly with some minor additions. Which was fun.</p><p>Favorite moment - when they sewed giant poison frog hide together to help them get through some areas where there are poisonous flora.</p><p>That moment and screenshot. MDMRN<p>New Read - Delicious in Dungeon, Volume 1</p><p>Okay, volume 1 sold me. It sold me hard.</p><p>Basic premise is that a band of fantasy adventurers get through a dungeon, only to be so hungry that they cannot fight against a red dragon and one of their compatriots is swallowed whole by the dragon.</p><p>So, after regrouping, they decide to go back. But, like they need to eat along the way. </p><p>Enter Senshi. Senshi helps teach them how to cook monster they find in the dungeons and it's so much fun.</p><p>Glad I picked this up. MDMRN<p>New Read - Animal Crossing: New Horizons Deserted Island Diary, Volume 8</p><p>Another volume of Animal Crossing's on-going silly manga set in the New Horizons game. It's very silly, very fun, very full of in-jokes for folks who play the game.</p><p>Each chapter is a silly self-contained story. My favorite is the one where everyone decides to honor Tom Nook with gifts for all the good he's done for the island. They terraform to make an entire section of the island look like him. MDMRNNew Read - Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, Volume 4<br>

Volume 4 is still good. But, what did I expect? This series has been great so far.<br>
<br>
Volume 4 largely contains the full tale of our party with Sein. Sein is a priest with divine magic whose friend disappeared years ago. Frieren sees herself in him, which gives us some great bonding moments between the two of them.<br>
<br>
However, Sein is only with the party through this volume and leaves to continue on his way to find his lost friend.<br>
<br>
Regardless, this volume had some great moments and also we see it help Frieren begin to pick up on more emotional aspects of her past friendships that she never did before.<br>
<br>

MDMRNNew Read - Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, Volume 3<br>
<br>
Volume 3 has 3 parts. The first finished Frieren's battle with the demons from the previous volume. It is an intense battle of wits. The second is a journey north where they meet a priest and Frieren is encouraging them to join them. The third aspect, is a lot of flashbacks.<br>
<br>
The flashbacks are some of the more interesting parts of this volume. We see when Frieren first learned magic, how she reduced her aura, and then used that ability for centuries to trick and defeat demons.<br>
<br>
It was a well done volume and hard to put down. <br>
<br>
I mean, not sure what else to say, I am enjoying this series a lot. It has well written characters in an interesting, fantasy setting set in a world after a major heroes journey happened.<br>

MDMRNNew Read - Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, Volume 1<br>

This was the last read I had of 2024. <br>
<br>
I feel like Frieren was all over the internet in the back half of 2023 and through 2024, so I picked this up randomly from the library. I am glad I did.<br>
<br>
For those who don't know Frieren is an elf who helped save the world with the great hero Himmel after a 10 year quest. The group goes their separate ways, but while the other members of the group age as humans do, Frieren is an elf who appears to be eternally young and ageless. Decades pass and feel like a couple years when she returns and sees her friends are aged.<br>
<br>
When playing fantasy games or reading fantasy stories, everyone is aging together. The idea of an eternal elf walking off and coming back like no time has passed for them, but 50 years passed for her former companions is so unique to me.<br>
<br>
This is the basic setup of the story. It then follows as she's trying to understand her former compatriots better with their short, fleeting lives as well as training up her new apprentice, Fern. <br>
<br>
It's very well done, at least what I've read. Definitely looking forward to checking into Volume 2 to continue Frieren's journey.<br>

MDMRNNew Read - Kirby Manga Mania, Volume 7<br>
<br>
The Kirby manga is so incredibly goofy! Volume 7 is no different.<br>
<br>
The Kirby manga is a gag, slice of life manga set in the Dreamlands with Kirby, King Dedede, and other assorted characters from the games getting into silly situations. <br>
<br>
Volume 7 has a mix of summer related topics and just assorted silliness. One chapter involves King Dedede doing elaborate pranks on Kirby, including a moment where he dresses up like Kirby's long lost brother. Another is all about what everyone's summer break plans are - with Kirby wanting to just nap the summer away. Another chapter has King Dedede looking for love and, seeing Kirby in a wig performing in a play, suddenly has a crush on Kirby. It's all very goofy.<br>
<br>
One of the goofier chapters is an entire retelling of The Little Mermaid with Kirby and friends in the roles of the entire cast, including Kirby as the main mermaid herself! Kirby singing off-key that they are a pretty mermaid, is just fabulous.<br>
<br>
It's a lot of fun, it's approachable for all ages, and it's very silly. I read this in my living room around my kids. They all kept on asking me why I was snickering / chuckling while reading it, to which I'd show them random pages and gags. I definitely think at least a few of them are going to jump into more of the Kirby manga after seeing the gags from this volume.<br>

MDMRNNew Read - Codename Sailor V, Volume 2 (Eternal Edition)<br>

Volume 2 continues the tale of Minako Aino, AKA Sailor Venus or Sailor V, before the other Sailor Scouts unlock their potential.<br>
<br>
The first few chapters are very monster of the week, which is fun, albeit a bit fat-shamey in the very first chapter. But, the story ramps up a bit more as you get closer to the end of the volume.<br>
<br>
Minako begins to remember her previous lives as Sailor Venus. She begins to remember that she is just one of many Sailor Scouts who are tasked with protecting the kingdom and the Queen. These moments are great as she slowly uncovers the truth in the back of her mind about who she really is and who she had been in the past.<br>
<br>
That said, much like Volume 1, there's also a lot of campy fun with Sailor Venus stopping villains of the week from the Dark Agency as well as her romantic interest in Saijyo Ace. However, her romantic interest takes a dark turn as she discovers Ace's true nature and how he too is reincarnated from another previous life.<br>
<br>
It all ties back together and ends on a more serious note which brings us into the beginning of the mainline Sailor Moon franchise. <br>
<br>
It's a great ending to a fun series. <br>
<br>
All that said, the pages I decided to take pictures of are just ridiculous and I'd apologize, but I ain't sorry.<br>
<br>
Can't wait to get back to reading more of the mainline Sailor Moon manga.<br>

MDMRNNew Read - I Think Our Son Is Gay, Volume 4<br>

Okay there, Volume 4. Coming in hard. Let's review quickly.<br>
<br>
It's becoming clearer that Hiroki's brother Yuri is likely asexual. They handle it gently and have done so throughout. He wants to have friends. He likes having friends of various genders. However, he never is interested in dating / romance. This volume ramps up more of Yuri's story and the Mom (Tomoko), once again, being incredibly accepting.<br>
<br>
Further, we get more with Hiroki and Daigo, including an entire chapter from Daigo's perspective - which was fun. Daigo gets a girlfriend in Volume 4 and Hiroki's way of dealing with it is to just stop spending as much time with Daigo. But Daigo doesn't want that. He thinks Hiroki is incredible and wants to spend time with him. Which is adorable.<br>
<br>
Tomoko continues noticing things about how the world treats LGBTQ+ people. First, she notices TV shows that use gay people as the butt of a joke. Second, she notices how some of her coworkers have been treating Mr. Tano differently now that they know he's gay. She internally frustrated by the whole thing and, at times, outwardly chastises folks about it. <br>

Which I appreciate.<br>

She's trying to be an ally in her own way as a protective Mom who is seeing things she never noticed before in the world and about how LGBTQ+ people are treated. It's an awakening and I know exactly how that feels. As a straight person, I went through this same process of being "Wait, this is wrong and bad" about the treatment of LGBTQ+ folks in our culture and just not even noticing problematic things before.<br>

MDMRNNew Read - I Think Our Son Is Gay, Volume 2<br>

After reading volume 1, I reserved from the library all four additional volumes of I Think Our Son is Gay so I could read through it. <br>
<br>
Volume 2 - still cute.<br>
<br>
Volume 2, Hiroki is still into Daigo. Still hiding that he's gay from everyone. His Mom is still trying to do everything in her power to show that she will support him when he's ready to come out. <br>
<br>
We also learn that the Mom works a part time job and that one of her coworkers is gay. She is very interested in asking him questions about his life, his upbringing, about how his parent's reacted. It's kind of sweet seeing how she wants to ask an older, out gay person because she truly wants to know how to help her son.<br>
<br>
Another subplot in this volume revolves around Hiroki's younger brother. He has girls who have crushes son him, but he is just...ambivalent to the idea of dating altogether. Which is fine. However, the girls in his class get very angry at him for just trying to be their friends and he really doesn't understand why they want to move on to dating. I feel this will develop more in subsequent volumes.<br>
<br>
Overall, it continued being cute. The Mom continued trying to be supportive. Hiroki continues to be in the closet.<br>

For those who've never read them before, the Pokémon Pocket Comic series are a collection of 4-koma manga that's filled with Pokémon gags. The Black and White issue goes through every new 'Mon in the Unova Pokédex with a goofy gag about each one, with Oshawott serving as a quasi narrator interacting with nearly every 'Mon in the book. <br>
<br>
I haven't read the Legendary one yet, but if it's anything like any of the others I've read, it'll be silly and fun, easy to pick up / put down and share with kids.<br>
<br>
If you have a kid (or are an adult who is) really into Pokémon, these are fun and worth checking out. Also, each 4-koma set of pages has fun facts about each 'Mon right out of the Pokédex.<br>
<br>
Anyway, they're fun and kind of funny. <br>

MDMRNFirst new manga read of 2024 - Wolverine: Snikt!<br>

I've been seeing this all over my Instagram feed for months of folks checking out this manga, so I had to dive in. I love alternate, manga interpretations of American comic characters.<br>
<br>
Wolverine: Snikt! effectively begins with Wolverine being isekai'd into an alternate future where an organic virus that created its own sentient bodies is destroying all humans. The only thing that can damage the creatures? Adamantium. <br>
<br>
It's not a very complicated plot. Wolverine gets pulled into this future. Wolverine meets with the rebel figures remaining. Wolverine helps them beat the creature. Wolverine returns home. Mid-story, Wolverine basically summarizes the entire plot saying, "So they traveled back in time and kidnapped me because they think that me and my claws can defeat an army of indestructible bacterial monsters?! Just my luck!"<br>
<br>
The art of Tsutomu Nihei, the creator of Blame, is vivid, detailed, and dynamic page after page. Some of them have no dialogue, just explosive and dynamic shots of Wolverine just going ham on some creatures. <br>
<br>
I really enjoyed this self-contained Wolverine story and Nihei's take on the character. His art simultaneously looked very familiar for Wolverine, but also different. He felt almost younger than the Wolverine I'm used to in Marvel comics.<br>
<br>
Overall: If you want a self-contained Wolverine story where he gets isekai'd into an alternate dimension with a ton of action-heavy fights, this is exactly what you're looking for.<br>
