‘Tis once upon a time again for a li’l Teatime Storyhour. Let’s call this one “Eight Portals, v.3”

It’s a choose-your-own-adventure. Here are the pictures, what is the story? — this, a collective picturebook prompt. Add yr story, page-by-page (pic-by-pic) in the replies.

If you want, invite others to join in (“read/write”) and add to your thread, this spinning the story further, collaboratively. Or choose to designate yr thread “read only” if you’d like to keep it as is.

Are these images eight pages/parts of one continuous tale? Or rather eight separate portals to threads of their own? You decide.

After slow-rolling the first stop sign, we continue on until we reach our next decision point: another four-way stop, but this one's in a construction zone, next to a brand new apartment building, covered in security cameras.

There's a car behind us, but no one's coming from the other directions.

We are NOT in an #IdahoStop state.

Are we willing to roll this #StopSign too, with witnesses and video?

We have overwhelmingly chosen the longer route, avoiding a dodgy interchange between two multi-lane urban arterials.

We hang a right and reach our next decision point -- a stop sign on an uphill across a low-traffic road. Do we sacrifice our hard-earned momentum and come to a full stop, or do we roll through after carefully checking that no one's coming?

j/k we are rolling. This is not a decision worth pondering. We have bigger fish to fry...

Continued thread

...We can continue straight to take the most direct route, out of the neighborhood and onto the 5-lane arterial that runs right downtown. It's the shortest distance, only 2 miles to work. There's a sidewalk, but no bike lane.

Or we can turn right, wending our way through neighborhoods. This route's half a mile longer and we'll still hit the arterial eventually, but we'll avoid a super sketchy intersection.

Here's an @AtlasObscura article for if you have fond memories of the "Choose Your Own Adventure" series (The one where you were at summer camp and then suddenly, in a Robin Hood story! Holding your finger in a page where you'd made a choice in case your adventure ended and you needed to go back to that crucial point!) Back in 2017, Sarah Laskow wrote about projects to map the forking structure of the stories, in doing so, revealing how the series evolved, its connection to modern interactive fiction, and the most complex, straightforward, and frustrating books.

Your eyes scan them, hungrily, wanting to devour the knowledge within. Alas, though, that isn't why you're here. You're here to speak to the last dragon.

And there she sits; on a throne of books in her humanoid form, looking down with silver eyes at the three of you as you make your way to her.

"Who are you," her voice booms throughout the stacks and shakes your bones, "And what do you want from me?"

In most other realities, the Royal Library of Alexandria burned. The Seat of the Muses. The Museum. It had housed half a million documents from many different nations. There was even a zoo there, amongst the lecture halls and shrines and gardens.

Now, though empty of people and animals, it seemed to have acquired much more books and scrolls than any of its counterparts.

"What's the worst that could happen?" you ask, and lead the way in.

You hear your companions following behind you, and you can feel Loki's amused smirk and raised eyebrow without even looking.

"Makaria," that voice whispers again, "You're making a mistake."

But the voice doesn't control you.

And when the doors open and you step inside the library, every other thought is whisked away. This is a sight you never thought you'd see.

Loki clears her throat and says, "I believe the answer you're looking for is a wish."

The statues bow their heads, turn back to their previous positions, and say, "Enter here now, if you dare.
However, you best beware,
Of what you will face in there.
The Dracan King has been alone,
Since Shadow rent her blood and bone.
If you want to keep your lives,
We suggest; don't go inside."

Frowning, your friend turns. "What do you think, boss?"
